Documented History:
At one event, Joe Chamberlain was rear-ended in a preliminary race. The impact was great enough to break one of the cross braces in the roll cage. He could not race in the feature race until it was repaired. He and his crew had not anticipated needing roll cage stock, so they had nothing with which to repair the cage.
One of the crew members said “I have an idea. I’ll be back.” The crew member went to the nearest intersection and stole the pole holding the stop sign. The crew welded in the sign post, and made the race. The sign pole remains (a prominent) part of the roll cage to this day.”
